book trilogy design

Designing book covers for three of David Sedaris's ingenious short stories: "Untamed", "Long Way Home", & "Understanding Owls".

My creative process began with the initial cover design for the first book in my trilogy Untamed, which dealt with making friends with animals. I then repeated the process to design the covers for the second and third books in the trilogy, taking into consideration cohesion and viability for a trilogy.

Discovery

The goal of creating a book cover is to entice the consumer to want to explore the book. The design should represent the story without giving away too many details.

01

Ideation

After reading the story online, I formed a sense of tone and main themes/ideas for my book cover. After brainstorming, sketching, and resketching the weak ideas, I eventually came up with solid concepts.

02

Design

Bringing my concepts to life involved experimenting with different mediums, including paint, digital software, and air-hardening clay.

Final Result

The final outcome was a set of three cohesive paintings used to create the trilogy's book covers to a few of David Sedaris's stories.
